Cloze Test | Concept & Practice Quiz

shape Introduction

The word "Cloze" is derived from closure in Gestalt theory. The exercise was first described by W. L. Taylor in 1953. Either mechanically or selectively, words may be removed from the text in question depending on exactly what aspect it is intended to test for. An exercise, test or assessment consisting of a portion of text with certain words removed, where the candidate is asked to replace the missing words is known as a Cloze Test.

What is Cloze Test?

  • Cloze Test Questions consist of a passage (Financial/Social/Environmental/Story based) from which some words (5 - 10) are removed -

  • Candidates are expected to fill in the blanks approximately.

  • Given options are almost similar and confusing.

  • It is a test of vocabulary, reading speed and comprehensive logic.

A Cloze test or a cloze detection test is an exam or an exercise in which a portion of the language with certain items are removed. The test participant is then asked to fill in the missing portions of the language. This exercise is generally carried out to assist candidates in English learning. The word Cloze from closure as described in Gestalt Theory. W.L. Taylor first touched upon the cloze test exercise in the year 1953. The words may be deleted either mechanically (every nth word) or selectively, depending upon what aspect of language it seeks to assess. This methodology has been extensively described in many pieces of literature; however, teachers of languages are commonly known to devise adhoc tests. An example will make clear this concept of Cloze test.
Example: Today, Patrick went to the _____(1)_____and bought some sweets. He knew it was going to rain, but he forgot to take his____(2)______and ended up getting wet in transit.
In the above sentence, the missing words are:
    1. Market 2. Umbrella
In the above example given, students are given to fill up the blanks based on their understanding of the text and its context. If you notice, the first blank is preceded by "the", which means a noun, an adverb or an adjective must be filled in the blank. However, if you note, a conjunction follows the blank. Therefore, taking into consideration grammatical correctness, only a noun can come in the first blank. Possible nouns that fit are: store, supermarket, shops, market or grocer. In the second blank, the possible words could be umbrella or raincoat, as there is talk of rains and getting wet in transit. Here's hoping things would have become clearer now. More on the Cloze test follows.
A cloze test passage has a pre-defined structure and a logical pattern. It has events occurring in a certain chronological order. This order helps maintain a unified tone throughout the passage. To solve cloze test questions, one must be proficient in the English language. A candidate appearing for the cloze test must have both vocabulary and grammar proficiency to answer the test correctly. Given below are some tips to solve cloze test questions:
    1. Read the passage carefully 2. Identify tone and sentence patterns 3. Select the type of word 4. Eliminate incorrect options by logical reasoning 5. Proof-read after filling in the blanks with the options shortlisted
Now, I will explain each of the above tips in brief:
    1. Read the passage carefully:
You need to remember that you are reading a cloze test passage. Each passage has a particular objective and its own consistency. Therefore, your first task will be to read the passage thoroughly, at least once, if not more. Through reading, you need to build a general idea about the passage and its meaning. Once you get the basic idea of the passage, you will be better able to answer the questions posed in the form of 'fill in the blanks'.
    2. Identify the tone and sentence patterns in the passage
Since it is a cloze test passage, it contains sentences, which are logically connected to each other through a common thread of ideas. You need to grasp the basic idea of the passage. Read each sentence and try to identify both the tone and the sentence pattern of the sentences used in the passage.
To explain further, let us take an example: Learn pick was ______________ with the primary objective of __________________ home tutors who provide tuitions and students who require home tuitions.
From the example above, we can see that Learn pick is an online channel or platform on which home tutors and students meet. This comes from general knowledge. Therefore, the words that can fit in the blanks above are:
    • Started
    • Connecting

The tone of the above example is elemental in helping us find out the answers. Some common tons are critical, descriptive, humorous and narrative. If you are able to home in on the tone of the passage, solving the cloze test questions becomes easy.
    3. Select the type of word
Once you have understood the tone of the passage or the sentence, you need to find out the correct word to fit in the blanks. You need to decide whether to fill in a noun, article, pronoun, verb, preposition or conjunction in the blanks. The option, which maintains the tone and consistency of the sentence, is the correct option.
Let us take an example and explain this: Essentially I am interested in ____________(1) world, in this ___________(2), not in some other ________________(3) or a future life.
      1. (a) this (b) that (c) real (d) imaginary (e) our 2. (a) life (b) reality (c) existence (d) truth (e) faith 3. (a) reality (b) world (c) life (d) plan (e) universe

The correct answers to the blanks in the above sentence are (a), (b) and (c) respectively. The completed sentence will read thus: Essentially, I am interested in this world, in this reality, not in some other life or a future life.
The bolded words are the answers to the blanks.
Here, one needs to pay attention that if there are a set of common or related words in a cloze test question we should select the words, which are commonly used.
    4. Eliminate incorrect options by logical reasoning
To solve cloze test questions, we have the usual inspection method. However, this method should be resorted to only after you exhaust options 1, 2 and 3 explained above. In the inspection method, you check the options given as alternatives to solve the cloze test question. Remove ones which you feel are out of context or definitely incorrect. There is at least one incorrect option in every question.
This can be better understood using an example: There are a number of people here who are fat, but _____________________
      a) Underweight b) Overweight c) Physically fit d) Thin d) Emaciated

In the above sentence, you can remove options a) and d). You have to choose the correct answer from the options b), c) and d). On inspection, the correct answer is c).
    5. Proof-read after filling in the blanks after shortlisting the correct option
If you have followed all the steps mentioned above, correctly, you will have got a passage that reads logically and correctly. Proofreading the passage once after filling in the correct options will let you iron out the issues if two or three answer options are nearby and you have selected an incorrect option.
This may be explained with the example given below: My aunty waved me goodbye and the bus __________(1). The man sitting (2)_______________to me was a doctor (3)______________to Kannur, (4) ________ participate in a conference.
      (1) Started (2) Next (3) Going (4) To

The above sentence is a good example of the tip discussed in step 5 above.
Examples: In this section, a couple more examples are provided to understand cloze test further.
    1. The joint family gave way to the _____________ family. (lonely, individual, nuclear, self-centered, separate) Answer: nuclear
    2. There develops a certain __________ in that knowledge. (security, assurance, solace, restfulness, confidence) Answer: confidence
The answers to the blanks in the above sentences are written at the end of the sentences in bold.
Steps to be followed from Cloze test: -

  • Read the full sentence around the blank space.

  • Imagine the word that you can use in the blank space.

  • Check every option, try to remove useless options, usually 2-3 options are absolutely out of context.

  • Trust your intuition and go for the first option after thorough comparison with the other similar option(s).

  • Change any answer if you feel so.. don't stick to the same question. Just read it twice. If you still can't get it, go to the next one.

Strategy: -

  • Make your vocabulary really strong.

  • Read the passage in one go without marking the answers.

  • Eliminate the words which do not fit meaning.

  • Eliminate the word which do not match the tone.

  • Eliminate those words which are among the remaining options.

This section will give you information on how to prepare to answer cloze test questions. If you follow the three preparation tips mentioned below, you will be able to handle any cloze test question.
    (1) Eclectic reading
This titular word means reading about multiple subjects. For example, you can read about science, geography, history, technology, etc. You can read blogs, newspaper articles and journals of various subjects. This will help you in two aspects. First, it will make your reading rapid and second, it will make you understand different tones and the related words used to depict them.
    (2) Built your vocabulary
To master the cloze test questions, you need to have an excellent vocabulary. This is only possible if you do three things. You should read, read and read more. The more your reading, the better will be your understanding of what word goes where. Additionally, it will also help you build your vocabulary. In this way, you will be able to master the cloze test.
    (3) Practice, practice and more practice
We already know. There is no substitute to hard work. Therefore, in order to master the cloze test, you need to solve as many questions as you can lay your hands on. Cultivate the habit to solve at least 2-3 cloze test passages a day. Doing this on a consistent basis will make you an expert in cloze test questions. Each time you appear for a cloze test passage, you can analyze your performance vis-à-vis your previous performance and see if you are improving.
